Guess My Weight

My height is in the 5th percentile for women my age. Which percentile do you think I’m in for weight?
a. 5th percentile
b. 10th percentile, so I should lose 5 pounds to get down to the 5th
c. 10th percentile, which is probably close to average for my height
d. A lady never tells

This question illustrates a statistical phenomenon called regression to the mean. If two random variables X and Y have positive but imperfect correlation, then, given x, the percentile rank of a single observation of X, we’d expect the percentile rank for the corresponding observation of Y to lie somewhere between x and the 50th percentile. (Note that if x>50, then the expected percentile rank for Y lies between 50 and x.)

It’s clear that height and weight have positive but imperfect correlation. Positive because on balance, tall people tend to weigh more than their shorter counterparts. Imperfect because a tall thin person could weigh less than a short body builder.

So we see that the correct answer is C. Being in a higher percentile for weight just means that I’m not quite as light as I am short, which, given how short I am, is not entirely surprising. It’s certainly possible to be in the fifth percentile for both height and weight. But we wouldn’t expect it, just like we wouldn’t expect lightning to strike the same place twice.
